Karaoke Commandments

Commandment #1 THOU SHALT NOT jeer, heckle, boo, harass, or otherwise interrupt a singer. It's not only bad manners, but depending on the crowd, you may experience anything from a lot of nasty looks, to a very quick 86 out of the bar. My personal reaction would be to deny singing privileges to the offender.

Commandment #2 THOU SHALT NOT get too loaded if you are planning to perform. The equipment used for Karaoke is expensive, and if you were to cause an accident resulting in damage, you may be held accountable. The 86 experience may also be encountered here.

Commandment #3 THOU SHALT NOT whine about when your next turn is. If a good K.J. is working the place, he or she will be fair about the schedule, and you will sing no less than everyone else. Granted, there are those who will favor their friends and co-K.J.s, and if you run across one of these, go someplace else where you will be treated better. Their loss right?

Commandment #4 THOU SHALT NOT be upset if another patron sings a song you were planning to sing. There are usually plenty of songs to choose from, and you can always do it another night. The first K.J. I ever knew, always knew her regulars and their favorite songs. If there were any duplicate songs coming up, she would ask you if you wanted to change your selection, or sing it right after the other, as a sort of challenge.

Commandment #5 THOU SHALT NOT use foul language when at the mike. It might be suitable at Joe's Cave, but most places find it very UNacceptable. You might find it is the last time on-stage for you, if you don't wind up taking the old 86 Express!

Commandment #6 THOU SHALT NOT swing the mike or dance with the mike stand. Please have respect for the equipment, and be aware of the space available for your performance. That mike cord will only go so far you know.

Commandment #7 THOU SHALT NOT sing along louder than the performer. This can be very irritating, and is a lesson I learned first hand. The guy handed me the mike and told me to finish the song. VERY embarrassing!!

Commandment #8 THOU SHALT NOT join in with a singer unless you are invited. This could also be very embarrassing, and is no way to make friends.

Commandment #9 THOU SHALT NOT carry on a loud conversation next to the stage. Most bars have limited space, and you will find the stage is sometimes close to some tables. If the sound is not right, it is hard to follow the song cues and such when you have people talking loudly next to you.

Commandment #10 THOU SHALT APPLAUD!! Come on now, anyone who gets up there deserves some attention, don't you think? And besides, we're all here to have fun!!
